Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan says the marine economy must account for more than 50 percent of gross domestic product by 2020.
Addressing the fourth International Exhibition on Shipbuilding, Marine Technology and Transportation on March 11, Deputy PM Nhan said the development of marine technology and the shipbuilding industry are important priorities in the country’s marine development strategy.
He said environment protection and the fishing industry are also top priorities for the 2020 strategy.
Ship design consultants, shipbuilders, suppliers and register offices are currently exhibiting in more than 600 booths at this year’s biannual exhibition.
Two-thirds of the participants at the four-day event are from outside Viet Nam including China , Denmark , France , Germany , Italy , Japan and Singapore .
Seminars on finance issues relating to the shipping and subsidiary industries will be held on March 12 and 13.
A signing ceremony for economic contracts and a medal presentation ceremony for high-quality ship products are also expected to take place at the exhibition.
